World Athletics is saddened to hear that former world 10,000m record-holder Fernando Mamede died on Tuesday (27) at the age of 74.

Mamede was born in Beja on 1 November 1951 and went on to become one of the leading figures in Portuguese athletics.

Over the course of two decades, his international career took him from the 1970 European U20 Championships to the 1989 World Cross Country Championships and included three editions of the Olympic Games – Munich in 1972, Montreal in 1976 and Los Angeles in 1984.

Mamede was a two-time global medallist. He clinched individual bronze at the World Cross Country Championships in Madrid in 1981 and then world cross-country team bronze in New York in 1984 together with his great rival and Sporting Clube de Portugal clubmate Carlos Lopes, Antonio Leitao and Joao Campos who, along with Rosa Mota, were part of a golden generation of Portuguese runners.

After twice improving the European 10,000m record – to 27:27.7 in Lisbon in 1981 and to 27:22.95 in Paris in 1982, narrowly missing Henry Rono’s 1978 world record of 27:22.47 – Mamede did break the global mark, taking the world 10,000m record to 27:13.81 in Stockholm on 2 July 1984.

He would remain the world record-holder for five years.

His Olympic career saw him contest the 800m, 1500m and 4x400m in 1972; the 800m and 1500m in 1976; and the 10,000m in 1984. He was a heavy favourite in that 1984 10,000m following his world record, but he was unable to finish the race.

Mamede also competed at the inaugural World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983. He was unbeaten in the 5000m that year but chose to contest the 10,000m in Helsinki, winning his heat and finishing 14th in the final.

He set a total of 27 national records during his successful career, from the 4x400m up to the 10,000m.
